I recently read an article in a local magazine about how VAT is going back up to 17.5% and the effect that is set to have on small businesses.

“THE Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is calling for a delay in the return of the rate of VAT back to 17.5per cent, saying it is bad timing and bad for business. The FSB says the timing of VAT rise - from its current 15 per cent due on New Year's Day, will leave small firms with very little to celebrate. The Government is being urged to delay the rise until 1st February. As well as helping to keep tills ringing after the festive season this would be an easier time to administer all the price changes and updates. The British Retail Consortium, a lobby group for shop owners, is also pressing hard for the 2.5% rise to be delayed.

Chairman of the Wessex Region, Ken Moon, said: "Chancellor Darling has little to lose by delaying the restoration of the 17.5 per cent VAT rate for just one month, but this would help retailers during the January sales season. He might even be tempted to postpone the increase until after the next election, when it might not be his problem."

Alistair Darling cut VAT to 15% in his 2008 pre-Budget report to help prop up consumer spending in the run-up to last Christmas. However, there are mixed opinions on the impact of the cut. The think tank Centre for Economic and Business Research claimed it boosted sales by £2.1 billion in the six months to April 2009 but the FSB said it had failed to lift sales for 97% of its members”

I’d be interested to hear how small businesses feel about this .. I must admit I hadn’t put great thought into it until I read this article. I think that Charlie Moo’s may have to reconsider some of our prices. Please do leave your comments below.

As part of my other business venture Networking Mummies (Dorset) and now (Hampshire) we are excited to announce that we will producing our very own Dorset Business Mum's Journal in conjuction with MumsClub.

Jane from MumsClub has been producing these journals for a while now and her vision is to produce a 'Midlands' edition and Networking Mummies will be producing the 'Dorset' edition, this being distributed in March 2010.

What is the Business Mum's Journal?

In the Summer of 2008, MumsClub published the first magazine of its kind to support all entrepreneurial mums. A magazine for mums in business and business-mums-to be, along with an inbuilt directory of mum-owned businesses.

The 32 page Journal is full of great advertorial stories and adverts. Distribution is supported through local Mothercare stores and in addition further distribution points are through a network of mums working from home, soft play centres, libraries, doctors, schools, nurseries, NCT etc.

5,000 copies of the Dorset Business Mums Journal will be published and will be launched into local Mothercare stores in the first 2 weeks of March with a further launch at our very own 'In The Pink' Fashion Show.

Advertising slots are now being sold for this great Magazine, which is a must for all mums in business!
