Last week we were invited to a #sweetsandtreats preview evening at The Making of Harry Potter Studio Tours – which was quite timely as ITV is currently running them in order at the moment, because you know we haven't seen them enough anyway! Harry Potter fans will get a taste for how magical meals and confectionery (both real and replica) were created in the first ever Sweets and Treats feature. From Monday 20th July – Sunday 6th September, visitors will discover how the Prop Department moulded jelly snakes, decorated sugar skulls and piped ice-cream sundaes during production.

Being such Harry Potter Geeks! Charlie had many questions to ask the lovely ladies making the lollies and iconic cake that Dobby drops on the Dursleys’ guests in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets! Did you know they had 3 different cakes to film this scene the third was made with meringue that had a whole in the middle which was then filled with angel delight to make it extra squishy!!!

Mum and I aren't fans of Butterbeer but of course didn't turn our noses up at the ice-cream! Butterbeer ice-cream will be available to purchase in the Studio Tour’s new backlot café for the first time this summer as well as frothy tankards of the drink which is reminiscent of shortbread and butterscotch. It was so good and is a perfect snack to enjoy on a summer day sat outside by the night bus! Be careful though you don't get brain freeze! Poor Megan!

On the Diagon Alley set (remember it's Diagon Alley not DIAGONALLY! You don't know where you might end up!) visitors will be able to learn how towering ‘frozen’ desserts were assembled outside Florean Fortescue’s ice-cream parlour.

During production, graphic designers were tasked with creating dozens of unique sweet boxes and wrappers for treats from Honeydukes and Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. In the end they created more than 120 different items for the Weasley twins’ shop and some of their original sketches and designs will be shown in the attraction’s Art Department especially for Sweets and Treats.

Some iconic sets have also be given a makeover as the Great Hall’s long tables are lined with props from Hogwartsfeasts, it was hard to tell what was real and what was fake as everything looked sooooo good! You can also find Harry, wearing his oversized clothing, and Ron sat at the back of the train munching from the Honeydukes sweet cart, after they met for the first time n Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Food facts:

  • Chocolate desserts of all kinds covered the Great Hall tables in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and nearly all of it was actually made out of intricately-painted resin. However, some edible pieces were baked such as the chocolate phoenix cake which is displayed at the Studio Tour (having survived more than seven years in storage).

  • To make the scene where Ron throws up slugs in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets more palatable for actor Rupert Grint, film-makers created the slimy creatures out of orange-flavoured jelly.

  • More than 300 litres of silicone were used to make the vibrantly-coloured sweets in Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes, including Puking Pastilles and Nosebleed Nougat.

  13. There must be something in the air because I've been re-watching the series too... I would have died to go on this tour! I mean, I'm facinated with all things food, but food and Harry Potter? Come on, that's awesome. And the slugs being flavored... That's all I will think about when I see that scene from now on. LoL! - Jerusha, TheDisneyChef.com
