Mumpreneur? Business Mum? Or just a plain old good egg??

supermumLast month I was awarded Dorset Business Mum of the Year 2010, it got me thinking about the terms ‘business mum’ and ‘mumpreneur’.  Oddly both terms conjure different images/persona to me.  I see a business mum as a mum in business regardless of their child‘s ages or the circumstances of their ‘motherhood‘ (i.e. children are at school full time or even adults. That doesn’t mean they aren’t still special and should be rewarded but I see mumpreneur’s in a different light. A mumpreneur that is someone just like me!! Their business developed after the birth of a child, they juggle children, home life and a business.  I regularly work late at night and take Megan to business meetings.  There’s something a bit more special, community vibed about mumpreneurs.

These are my 4 characteristics every mumpreneur should have:-
  1. Enthusiasm - bucket loads of the stuff!
  2. Sensational multi tasking skills
  3. Be hard working
  4. Be slightly insane!
So what does mumpreneur mean to you??

I would agree as the generic term 'business man/woman/person' is entirely different from entrepreneur, at least to me. One is a generic term, the other gives the image of someone actively creating business opportunities and nurturing their business.

Sometimes I worry that some people in the media overuse the term mumpreneur; I mean we don't call them dadpreneurs do we? They are just entrepreneurs. But in this kind of example, I think it is a positive term and, having kids myself, I can see how it really makes those fabulous mum skills a necessity, to balance it all. I'm about to take the plunge myself so I am always on the lookout for tips!

I agree with your characteristics and add passion for what you believe in. I dont have children and still juggle life and work. I admire Mums in business having to add the children into the equation too. Passion is needed for others to believe you in what you do and to keep you going when it gets a bit tough

Love the list Joanne. The other day someone suggested that I only profiled people with young children as Mumpreneurs. I don't see having older children rules someone out from being a mumpreneur ... although I guess at some point your children move out!
